Much like the rest of coastal Tanzania, Mafia Island experiences two dry seasons (June–October & December–February), ideal for diving, beach relaxation, and safari combos. The short rains generally occur November–December, while heavier long rains arrive from March–May.

Set 20 km from mainland Tanzania and roughly 130 km south of Zanzibar, Mafia Island is best reached by a quick flight from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, or Zanzibar. Ferries from the mainland can be irregular and unsafe. Once on the island, tuk-tuks are the simplest transport. Lodges line the reefs within the Rufiji Mafia Kilwa Marine Reserve and beyond, guaranteeing you direct access to the crystal-clear waters.
