Don’t miss the chance to discover Mafia’s unspoiled charm before rapid changes alter its tranquil vibe.
Much like the rest of coastal Tanzania, Mafia Island experiences two dry seasons (June–October & December–February), ideal for diving, beach relaxation, and safari combos. The short rains generally occur November–December, while heavier long rains arrive from March–May.
Seeking a quieter alternative to Zanzibar or Pemba Island? Mafia provides an authentic vibe, low tourist crowds, and a gateway to the Mafia Island Marine Park—East Africa’s best for Whale Shark sightings and thriving coral reefs. Friendly locals and pristine shores complete the allure.
Marine reserves abound with colorful corals and more than 400 aquatic species, including Whale Sharks, dolphins, and turtles. Inland, fruit bats, bushbabies, and hippos can be found, alongside diverse bird species like Goliath Herons and Palm-Nut Vultures. Towering baobabs and thriving mangroves form part of Mafia’s remarkable ecosystem—an authentic taste of Tanzania’s natural diversity.
Set 20 km from mainland Tanzania and roughly 130 km south of Zanzibar, Mafia Island is best reached by a quick flight from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, or Zanzibar. Ferries from the mainland can be irregular and unsafe. Once on the island, tuk-tuks are the simplest transport. Lodges line the reefs within the Rufiji Mafia Kilwa Marine Reserve and beyond, guaranteeing you direct access to the crystal-clear waters.
