Tanzania Migration Safaris

Witness a journey of life and death – the Greatest Show on Earth

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Migration Safari for True Wildlife Enthusiasts

In Northeast Tanzania, around Serengeti, you can observe one of the world’s most impressive wildlife spectacles: the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras. Roughly two million animals trek ~1000km in a clockwise path seeking fresh grazing and breeding grounds, forming an intense predator–prey dynamic. At times, it’s an emotional sight—nature’s raw circle of life on a massive stage. But for wildlife lovers, it’s an unmissable phenomenon.

Who Should Go?

Perfect for avid safari enthusiasts craving iconic images of thousands of wildebeest crossing croc-filled rivers or forging grassland roads in long columns. If nature documentaries have spurred your fascination with mega-herds on the move, then a migration safari in Tanzania (optionally extending into Kenya) hits the mark. Visually overwhelming and emotionally stirring, the Great Migration is something every nature lover should witness once.

Where to Experience It

The Great Migration roams between Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Masai Mara. It’s a year-round phenomenon, but prime viewing typically happens between June and October, when huge herds converge at rivers— the Grumeti (from mid-May) and the Mara (July onwards). There’s also an incredible wildebeest calving season in southern Serengeti around January and February. No matter the month, our guides use their expertise to place you near the heart of the action.

When to Go

The dry season (June–October) offers the best chance to see major river crossings, but the herds are moving year-round, making every month special in its own way: Calving season in Jan–Feb means newborn wildebeest and fewer visitors; mid–late May sees the herds at the Grumeti River; and July–October is the famed Mara River crossing in the north. By November–December, they begin looping back south, completing their epic cycle.

The Annual Cycle of the Wildebeest Migration

River crossings may take center stage, but the migration moves continuously. Not sure which window suits you? Our safari experts will craft a tailored itinerary that follows the herds’ natural patterns.

Accommodations

Serengeti lodging spans basic campsites to luxury tented camps and upscale lodges. For an immersive experience, consider Mobile Explorer Camps that move with the herds. Picture roomy dome tents, cozy beds, candle-lit dinners beneath African skies, and a front-row seat to a million wildebeest stretching across the plains.

Additional Information

Book Early: Migration season is extremely popular—secure your spot 6–12 months ahead for the best camp/lodge choices.

River Crossings = Big Crowds: Everyone wants that epic shot of wildebeest plunging into the water. For a quieter highlight, calving season in Jan–Feb offers plenty of drama without peak visitor numbers.

What to Expect on a Migration Safari

The wildebeest migration is every bit as dramatic as it sounds— from frantic river crossings to quiet dawn scenes of thousands of animals feeding. Between predator hunts, swirling dust, and newborn calves, you’ll watch nature’s raw circle of life unfold day by day. Even if a crossing eludes you, the near-constant movement of zebras, gazelles, and opportunistic lions ensures unforgettable sightings.

Evenings are spent in camp or a lodge under a star-filled sky. Mornings start early to catch potential crossings or track lion prides. Over your safari, you’ll follow the herds’ ancient instinct, discovering life, death, and everything in between.
